High Maintenance Woman finally goes straight, cont.
Rolfing, they learnt, was a thousand times more thorough than any scented oil massage
or trendy new yoga routine. "Everybody who's anybody in New York has their own personal rolfer,"
sniffed Stella, "and Aristotle Onassis never travelled anywhere without his. I even know one
savvy racehorse owner who insists on employing a rolfer to keep his horses in peak condition.
"Tara, who retained more staff than royals, made a note to get a rolfer on her payroll immediately.
As a tray of Bellinis arrived at the table, Stella continued to enlightened her enraptured audience and an
eavesdropping waiter on the merits of rolfing. She told them how Dr. Ida Rolf, a German
biochemist, developed rolfing in the Fifties using deep massage and movement techniques (not dissimilar to
those used by today's physiotherapists and osteopaths) to realign the soft tissues that cover our
muscles. It is a highly specialized practice and rolfers train for years. When
qualified, they use their knuckles, fingers and elbows in a relay of jabs, strokes and pressure locks to
dramatically correct their client's posture and restore optimum energy flow to the body. The
list of benefits is endless - rolfing, it seems, is a sure cure for anything from stiff neck, tight
constricted chests and back problems to sports injuries and even clenched jaws.
